Metal Buildings For Airplane Hangers and Indoor Horse Riding Arenas

By Sue Lemmon

Two common uses for metal buildings are airplane hangers and indoor horse riding arenas. Airplanes require very wide clear span areas. Metal buildings have the weight baring walls on the two long sides of the building. This being the case, the entire end can be left open or converted into doors. Doors on tracking can either be pushed down the side to open, or on a type of rotation hinge. The rotation hinge would enable the door to be opened, turned and then slid out of the way. Another advantage of a metal airplane hanger over a wood truss construction is the overhead clearance.  A metal building is bolted together at the top of the building leaving a vaulted ceiling. The wood truss building has a ceiling height of how ever tall the bottom of the trusses sit. When performing airplane maintenance the extra space gained in a vaulted ceiling is useful.

Pouring a cement floor in a hanger is also vital. A perfectly flat surface, the floor allows the plane to sit level. Also a cement floor is much easier to clean up and provides a good surface when cleaning and performing upkeep on it. Offices and other rooms can be built into the metal building as needed.

Indoor horse riding arenas also utilize wide clear span areas. Horses are one of the most expensive hobbies. Any stable offering an indoor arena has an edge on their competition. The ability to train year round can set them several paces ahead of the other local barns. If an indoor arena is present, a stable owner can also charge customers more in board.

Horses and riders both like the vaulted ceiling in a metal building. Especially when jumping, the higher ceiling gives a more open feeling. Overhead height should be at approximately sixteen feet, but the open ceiling to the peak makes horse and rider feel more comfortable.

For an indoor arena, adding extra large doors, skylights, and windows help to ventilate a building. And also it aids in setting horses at ease. There is no getting an airplane used to its new surroundings, but horses are a different story. It is very unnerving to a horse when they can hear noises of other horses and people on the outside of a building, but cannot see them. The extra doors and windows give the horses a chance to look out and see what the noise is. Then the horse and rider and continue working under saddle.

When researching costs, construction specifics, and building locations, be sure to include things such as snow load, local wind, and other codes relevant to your area. Metal building kits are some of the strongest on the market, but local codes must be considered when pricing and finalizing plans for a specific structure.
