A Look at the Different Styles of Horse Fencing on the Market Today

By Amy Wells

If you are getting set up to have horses on a farm, you may not realize that there are different styles of horse fencing available for you to choose from. Knowing what these different kinds are and what the pros and cons of each are as well can help you make the right decision to keep your horses healthy and safe.

One style of fencing that you can choose from is a wooden horse fence. These can be attractive but they will need upkeep. You also need to keep in mind that wooden horse fencing will usually be chewed on by the horses. This means that you need to finish them with things which will not hurt the horse if they are ingested. You want to make sure that your horse fencing is high enough as well that the horses cannot jump over them.

It is equally important to know what kind of fencing you should not purchase. There is also PVC fencing which may look as though it can be used for horses. It looks a lot like wooden fencing in that there are PVC boards attached to fence posts. Because it is PVC, it does not need to be sanded or painted. Because it looks like wooden fencing, many people may try to use it for their horses but the fact is that it should not be used for livestock or horses.

If you do not want to go with wooden horse fencing there is an excellent product on the market that is versatile enough to be used with different breeds of horse. Flex-fence is made of wire that can be coated or uncoated. The wire passes through a polyethylene rail. There are different styles of flex-fence horse fencing that you can select from. It depends on the size of horse or the kind of livestock that will be contained by the fence. If you are picking horse fencing for large horses, you will want rails that are supported by three wires. Smaller horses or animals can get away with rails that are supported by two wires.

You will rapidly find which style of fencing you prefer to use and which works best for the horses you are keeping. Horse fencing is more than just esthetic, it keeps the horses safe from wandering or from injury. Because you care for your horses as friends as well as animals it is important that you find what works best for you.
